Program for People Who Grew Up in a Dysfunctional Family
|
Growing up in a dysfunctional, alcoholic or abusive family creates psychological and emotional wounds which diminish the quality of peoples lives. Living with abuse, neglect and trauma teaches people to not trust the world. They become locked into survival roles as a way of coping with their lives. At Chestnut Hill we understand how growing up in the highly stressful environment of a dysfunctional or abusive family can create confusion, sadness, isolation, chronic anger, and feelings of hopelessness and depression. We work hard to reduce these negative feelings so that you can create a happier, more fulfilling life.
Here is what our program looks like:
- First, one of our therapists meets with you privately to get to know you and to learn about your personal needs and special circumstances.
- Next, your therapist works with you to design and implement the best treatment program tailored to your individual needs. This program focuses upon changing aspects of your life which have caused distress, anxiety and depression. A complete family history will be taken to help you examine patterns in your past that impact your life and relationships today.
- You will be given homework assignments consisting of reading and communication exercises to support your personal growth and produce positive changes in your feelings and behavior. Support groups are also available.
- If you are experiencing anxiety and depression, your therapist will work with you to determine whether or not to refer you to your primary care physician or one of our medical providers to be evaluated for antidepressant medication. This decision is always made with you as an active participant in the process. Your therapist also welcomes active participation by your family physician whose judgment you have come to trust.
As a result of treatment, you can generally expect to feel happier, be more socially involved, and begin to live a more fulfilling life.
Remember: You cannot change your family history. And its' effects are likely to cause you pain year after year until you heal your emotional wounds. Let us help you heal the wounds and take charge of your life!
