Treating Women With Depression
|
Women are much more likely to suffer from depression than men. At Chestnut Hill our clinicians can help you understand why you may be depressed. Important factors may include relationship concerns, role overload, and physical changes unique to a woman's life cycle. We can also help you take steps to treat your depression so you can return to living a happier and more fulfilling life.
Here is what our program looks like:
- First, one of our therapists meets with you privately in an introductory session to get to know you as an individual, your personal needs and special circumstances. Also, your therapist assesses the specific nature of your depression and its impact on your life.
- Next, your therapist works closely with you to design and implement the best treatment program for you tailored to your individual needs. This program will work to help you change those aspects of your life that have led to the distress you now feel. Additional issues you and your therapist may consider include social isolation, the role of negative or pessimistic thinking, and your personal history of loss. How well you take care of yourself may also play a key role in your depression.
- He/she works with you to determine whether or not to refer you to your primary care physician, gynecologist, or one of our medical providers to be evaluated for antidepressant medication. This decision is always made with you as an active participant in the process. Your therapist welcomes active participation by your own physician whose judgment you have come to trust.
- As a team, then, your therapist, your doctor, and/or one of our medical providers work closely with you to provide effective and efficient treatment so that you feel better and get your life back on track.
- As a result of treatment, you can generally expect to feel much happier, sleep and eat better, be more socially involved and begin to really enjoy your life.
Remember, depression is progressive. Left untreated, it can and often does get much worse. Let us help you get your life back on track.
